Where Are the Nine? A Theological Reflection on Gratitude and Obedience

 Where are the nine?” — Gospel of Luke 17:17

The question posed by Jesus invites thoughtful reflection rather than immediate judgment. While only one of the healed lepers returned to give thanks, it is worth considering that the remaining nine may not necessarily have been ungrateful. 

Several possibilities help us understand their actions more charitably:

1. Appreciation Expressed Differently

Gratitude is not always demonstrated in the same way. The nine may have felt deep appreciation but expressed it through obedience rather than an immediate return to the source. 

2. Testimony Through Action

Their healing itself could have become a powerful testimony—shared directly with family, immediate community members, and religious authorities—thereby witnessing to the miracle in a much broader context. 

3. Obedience to Priestly Instruction

In accordance with Mosaic Law, those healed of leprosy were strictly required to present themselves to a priest for examination and ceremonial cleansing. 

This instruction is grounded in fundamental Old Testament passages such as:

• Book of Leviticus 14:2–32
• Book of Deuteronomy 24:8

This structural requirement is also explicitly affirmed throughout the New Testament narrative:

• Gospel of Matthew 8:4
• Gospel of Mark 1:44
• Gospel of Luke 5:14
• Gospel of Luke 17:14

It is therefore reasonable to suggest that the nine proceeded to the priest in faithful compliance with these established commandments.

Redefining the Narrative

In this light, their actions may reflect legal and religious obedience rather than malicious ingratitude. The narrative, then, does not merely contrast gratitude with neglect. Instead, it highlights the deeper spiritual insight of the one who returned—recognizing not only the physical gift received, but fully acknowledging the Giver Himself.
